Hiding In Plain Sight – 1

Building a brick screen cube – part 1

The number of mature oak trees on this previously developed site created serval design challenges; site planning of program-required utilities was one.  Here, the solution was to hide the backup generator in plain site by surrounding it in a carefully detailed brick screen enclosure.  The intent was for the enclosure to be as “light” and transparent as possible while still fulfilling its function of visually screening the equipment inside.  To achieve this level of delicate assembly, a steel cage superstructure was designed and installed, and then the brick was applied as a curtainwall and tied back to the steel superstructure with a series of shelf angles.

Here the steel structure is in place and the masonry work has just begun.
