AALTO University Center
Location: Helsinki, Finland
Specifies: Student Center, Studio Spaces, and Associated Spaces
Status: Competition Entry Piece
This competition entry piece for the Student Center of Aalto University organized itself around a site perforated by existing pedestrian and bicycle pathways. Buildings explored the negative space between these established routes and dealt with interconnection in ways that worked with and enhanced existing flow. The architectural form is meant to be expressive of the geometric volume expressions of Alvar Aalto seen in works such as the auditorium of the University of Technology Helsinki and the Saynatsalo Town Hall. Materials are regional and expressive of the building volumes. Luminosity and color filtered light are themes used throughout.
